1. Clean your laptop screen:

Once you’ve tackled the inside of the laptop, the next job is to wipe the screen. Rule number one here is no cleaning products! Laptop displays are delicate creatures and don’t take kindly to chemical sprays. Instead, use a soft dry cloth and wipe in a circular pattern, careful not to apply too much pressure.

That should be enough to remove most smudges and fingerprints. You can also use warm water for sticky stains, like food or coffee splashes. Wet the cloth and be sure to wring it out first – you don’t want any drips inside the keyboard or vents.

2. Clean your laptop keyboard:

Biscuits, coffee and lunch at the desk may get you through your working day, but they can leave your laptop looking like a restaurant floor.
Surveys tell us that most keyboards are dirtier than toilet seats, so what is the best way to clean yours? Start by blowing compressed air between the keys to eliminate loose dust or crumbs.

Then wet your microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol (not too much) and give each key a good scrub. You can also use warm water for this task, but using alcohol will work better for removing oily stains. It evaporates quickly too, so there’s less chance of liquid getting inside your laptop.

If you’ve got some cotton buds, use them to clean the spaces between and around the keys. Again, it helps to wet them in isopropyl alcohol first, but be careful they don’t drip.

3. Shining the Case:

Clean the case by mixing clean water with a small amount of mild dish soap, such as purified or distilled water. Use this solution to gently scrub the case, careful not to damage any components or buttons.

Shining the Case
  • You can also mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and purified or distilled water. Don’t clean your case with solid chemicals or regular household cleaners like bleach or ammonia.
  • Be careful not to rub alcohol on your laptop’s screen when cleaning it. It can damage the anti-glare and scratch-resistant coatings on the screen. You can use the same sponge and cleansing solution to clean your laptop’s touchpad.
  • Don’t clean the inside of the ports or vents with a sponge; it could cause moisture to get inside your laptop and damage the parts.
  • As with the sponge, ensure the cotton swab is not too wet. Use light pressure to avoid squeezing moisture into the machine.
  • Be gentle with the toothpick to avoid scratching the surface of your case. Hold the tool like a pencil instead of pushing hard when you clean the ports or vents.
  • Never blow the compressed air directly into the port or vent. Pushing hard when you clean the ports or vents could move the dirt deeper into the machine and damage the parts inside. Use moderate pressure, repeatedly rubbing until the spot is gone.
  • If you previously had stickers on your laptop case, you may have more luck with an oil-based cleansing product like Goo Gone.
  • Once your laptop case is clean, you may notice spots of grime you didn’t see before. Use a cotton swab or ball dipped in rubbing alcohol to finish these last spots.
